A TV show about billionaires will not be complete without a dozen location changes. Whether it’s in a chauffeured vehicle, a private jet, or on a luxury yacht, the Roys of Succession are always dashing from one place to another. While they often just serve as backdrops, the various filming locations are crucial in establishing the wealth of the family and the extravagance they casually enjoy.
Succession has featured some of the most gorgeous apartments, houses, villas, and even castles. From the exclusive villages in The Hamptons to the panoramic views atop Norwegian peaks, spot these places when you binge-watch all four seasons of Succession.
? New York City, USA
The majority of Succession is shot in the country, with Manhattan serving as a major backdrop. That’s because Waystar Royco is headquartered in New York City’s Financial District, which houses some of the most powerful companies in the world. The cast often walks by the company’s signage and into the lobby of the building, but Waystar’s headquarters aren’t real. Most of the office scenes are shot in various buildings of the One World Trade Center complex.
New York is also home to Logan Roy’s Fifth Avenue residence. I hate to break it to every Succession fan, but the iconic property is mostly a studio set. Production designers based the architecture on the apartments of real-life moguls Edgar Bronfman and Charles Bronfman, including the elegant marble floors, grand staircase, and high ceilings. However, they used the facade and lobby of the American Irish Historical Society, also along Fifth Avenue, for Logan’s building.
It’s only fitting that they based the sets on real-life moguls since the Roy family themselves are based on various media family giants in real life. While the writers didn’t base everything in the show on the lives of the Murdochs or the Sulzberger Clan, they certainly may have been inspired by them.
With the exception of Connor, the Roy kids also have a permanent residence in the city. Succession featured some of the most extravagant properties under the family name, including Kendall’s massive penthouse in 35 Hudson Yards and ex-wife Rava Roy’s Tribeca apartment, which became Kendall’s ‘war room’ in Season 3.
Luxury hotels such as The Pierre, The Mandarin Oriental, and The Plaza also served as backdrops for Succession, where the family brushes elbows against some of the most influential figures in the world.
? Long Island, USA
A helicopter ride away is Logan Roy’s summer palace in The Hamptons. It was a central location in the second season’s premiere, as it’s where he offers Shiv the CEO position in secret.
The sprawling Hampton mansion is real, and it was built by Henry Ford II, a descendant of the Ford Motor Company founder. It sits on a 42-acre property that was sold in 2021 for $105 million, which is $15 million short of Roman Roy’s estimate of the real estate in Succession.
The Roys are not the only rich family with a house in Long Island, New York. The Pierce clan of PGM, one of Waystar’s biggest rivals, owns the Salutation Manor. Tucked away on a private island, the mansion was constructed by JP Morgan’s grandson, Junius Spencer Morgan III, in 1919. The 45-room mansion has been inspiring many writers ever since. Aside from Succession creator Jesse Armstrong, it’s rumored that the island and the manor were the basis for West Egg in The Great Gatsby.
Finally, Long Island is also the setting of ‘Hunting’(Season 2 Episode 3). In the episode, the high-level executives fly to Hungary for a hunting trip, but the cast and crew traveled to the Oheka Castle in Huntington to film. You can actually stay, wine, and dine in the chateau-inspired hotel like the characters in Succession.
? Santa Fe, USA
Say what you will about Connor Roy, but his New Mexico ranch is amazing. He’s the only one who doesn’t like taking part in the family business, and he seems perfectly fine living in a ranch he called Austerlitz, which is called Ranchero Alegre in real life. It has a nouveau-Western chic style with traditional adobe houses elevated for rich owners like Connor and is available for rent.
? Herefordshire, England
Logan Roy’s second wife, Lady Caroline Collingwood, is of English nobility. It was her one wish for Shiv to get married in the UK, in one of the castles that her side of the family owned. The Roys and their guests travel to Herefordshire, England, to attend Tom and Shiv’s wedding in Eastnor Castle.
Despite the name, the place is a 19th-century mock castle and was never home to a member of the Royal Family. That doesn’t mean the estate isn’t magnificent. And as we’ve seen in Succession’s Season 1 finale, the surrounding botanical garden, and lake made it the perfect location for a fairytale wedding.
? Korcula, Croatia
In the Season 2 finale, the Roys slip out of their business casual clothing and into their summer linens. They headed to the Mediterranean Sea aboard a super yacht where no shoes were allowed on the delicate teak deck. (Sorry, Greg.)
The superyacht headed north to the Adriatic Sea, and some of the Succession cast members, including Shiv and Tom, filmed memorable scenes on the Korčula island of Croatia. Thankfully, it’s not a private island, and fans can actually marvel at the well-preserved medieval structures in town before heading to the cerulean waters of the Adriatic Sea.
? Tuscany, Italy
Lady Caroline Collingwood surprises her children with a wedding invitation to an unknown man in Season 3. And what’s Succession without a destination wedding? Amidst tensions in the family, specifically between Kendall and everybody else, the Roys made their way to Tuscany, Italy to see their mother off.
They filmed in many different villas in Tuscany, but the majority of the scenes were shot on the beautiful grounds of Villa La Foce. You can see the aristocratic gardens the guests wandered in, where Shiv and Tom made fun of Greg for trying to juggle several women. They also filmed some scenes in the town of Cortona, specifically the relaxed bachelorette party of Lady Caroline.
Meanwhile, Roman Roy headed to Villa La Cassinella on Lake Como, where GoJo CEO Lukas Matsson was staying, to try to win his favor over Kendall.
? Valldal, Norway
And finally, in Season 4, the Roy children and Waystar’s executives head to Norway for a retreat with Lukas and his team. They’re currently in the middle of selling to GoJo, and the Swede wants to make sure that the Americans are a cultural fit. Or so he says. What he really wants, based on the episode title ‘Kill List,’ is to figure out who to keep and who to fire — which wouldn’t even come close to some of the worst things characters have done on succession.
Succession fans may recognize Lukas’s hotel as the house in the movie Ex Machina. The sleek Juvet Landscape Hotel already made its debut as the main setting of the science fiction film. It’s nestled in the mountains of Valldal and is surrounded by stunning fjords, waterfalls, and cliffs, living up to its name. And unlike the villas in Italy and the castles in England, the rooms here are surprisingly affordable for the rest of us. The Roy brothers also headed up the Nesaksla mountain with Lukas aboard the Romsdalen gondola, which is open all year round.
While we can only dream of visiting many of the Succession filming locations, some of these are actually open to the general public and at prices within reach. The HBO series also shows how disposable these views are for rich people like the Roy family.
In fact, the only reason Lukas met with Kendall and Roman on the mountain is to deliver this line, “People are f**king tiny, right? But not us. Not us.” When you’re as rich as any of the people in Succession, traveling to expensive or inaccessible destinations is just another way to emphasize the power you have over others.
