Wednesday is one of Netflix’s most successful shows and has definitely done the Addams Family justice. Jenna Ortega is an absolutely amazing female lead as Wednesday Addams, and the dark world of Nevermore Academy would be an enthralling place to find yourself—if it existed. Luckily for us, it actually does exist. Well, okay, Nevermore Academy doesn’t, but you can still visit the filming locations from Wednesday if you wanted to.
While the show itself is set in America, specifically Jericho, Vermont, the filming was basically entirely done in Romania. Romania is known for its medieval castles, Gothic churches, and small, charming towns. You might have to do a bit of traveling, but here are all the filming locations from Netflix’s hit series Wednesday.
Visit Nevermore Academy in Romania
Nevermore Academy was a few different locations, but the exterior was filmed at Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni, Romania. Cantacuzino Castle was constructed in 1911 and is Neo-Romanian in style. The castle itself is around 34,000 square feet in size and is made entirely of carved stone and brick. It definitely made a great setting for the exterior shots of Nevermore Academy.
The interior was a different building—or buildings, we should say. Palatul Monteoru (Monteoru House) and Casa Niculescu Dorobantu served as the interior sets for Wednesday. Both can be found in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, which is a lovely city to visit even without the Wednesday filming locations. There’s also the Bucharest Botanical Gardens which was the setting for the shots of Nevermore Academy’s greenhouse and Botany classes.
These four locations all fit the feeling of the Addams Family, Goth, and Wednesday’s bleak outlook on life perfectly. The good news is that all three of the four are open to the public. Cantacuzino Castle has a courtyard filled with sculptures, and there are daily tours of the interior. Monteoru House has recently been turned into a multicultural center with a restaurant in the garden, while the interior has been turned into a venue for concerts, exhibitions, and more.
The Bucharest Botanical Gardens are, of course, open to the public and a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike. That said, Casa Niculescu Dorobantu is, unfortunately, privately owned, but you can still visit it and take a walk around the exterior. Its architecture is beautiful and is definitely great for an impromptu photo session. It’s actually for sale, so if you have a bit of cash to blow, you can live at Nevermore Academy if you really wanted to.
Burlington Train Station isn’t in Burlington
Remember that Wednesday takes place in Jericho, Vermont, and Jericho is supposed to be a small town forcing residents to travel to Burlington to catch a train. The Burlington Train Station is actually the Sinaia Train Station, also in Romania. The Sinaia Train Station looks absolutely gorgeous and is Neoclassical in style. You can take a train from Bucharest to Sinaia, so make sure to add it to your Wednesday filming locations itinerary.
The High School Wednesday Gets Expelled From
At the beginning of the show, Wednesday gets expelled from Nancy Reagan High School for almost killing a group of bullies after dropping two bags of piranhas into the pool. Luckily (or unfortunately, depending on if you’re Wednesday), no one died, but she was still expelled. Like every other scene, this was filmed in Romania at Politechnica University of Bucharest., which happens to be within walking distance of the Bucharest Botanical Gardens if you do plan on visiting.
The Swimming Pool Wednesday Drops the Piranhas In
There’s a slight caveat to the above filming location. The pool that she drops the piranhas into is not at Politechnica University. It’s actually a completely different location and can be found at Bazin inot Dinamo (Dinamo Swimming Pool). The pool is open to the public, so feel free to head on over and take a quick swim while you’re in Bucharest visiting the other Wednesday filming locations.
The Abandoned Gates Mansion
The abandoned estate where Garrett Gates and his family lived is just outside of Bucharest in Dâmbovița. The actual name of the filming location is Conacul Olga Greceanu. This is a private house and is not open to the public, but you can admire it from the public street it is located on. The building is in slight disarray, but it’s still beautiful all the same.
The Lake Scenes in Wednesday
Any of the scenes in Wednesday that featured a lake used Brănești Lake, which can be found outside Bucharest in the east. The Edgar Allen Poe Cup Boat Race in all its glory would have been filmed at this lake instead of Lake Champlain, as the show might have led you to believe. Raven Island is probably not an island and is instead just off the shore of the lake.
Buftea Studios
The rest of the scenes that didn’t use a physical location were almost certainly shot at Buftea Studios. Buftea Studios is located just outside Bucharest and has been involved in a ton of major productions over the years. Scenes set inside the town of Jericho were actually filmed at Buftea with the help of some CGI and polishing from the behind-the-scenes crews.
