2022 saw the release of hit anime shows like Spy x Family, a show about an assassin and a spy taking care of a psychic child together, as well as follow-up seasons to popular franchises such as Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures. But that’s last year’s anime news. This 2023, we’re seeing a slew of hotly anticipated releases, namely the first adaptation of the web novel Solo Levelling and movies that expand on the worlds of Kaguya-sama: Love Is War and Sailor Moon.
2023 Anime Shows to Keep an Eye Out For
1. Solo Levelling

Solo Leveling is a Korean web novel, sometimes called a manhwa, written Chugong and illustrated by Jang Sung-Rak. The illustrator passed away back on July 23, 2022. The Redice Studio Twitter account released a statement explaining that the artist died of a cerebral hemorrhage due to a chronic illness. That said, the production of the anime adaptation of the manhwa is pushing through under Japanese animation studio A-1 Pictures.
The series will be directed by Shunsuke Nakashige who you may remember for his work on Attack on Titan, Shakugan no Shana, and Sword Art Online. While there’s no word on who’ll be voicing the characters in the show, anime streaming service Crunchyroll has already announced that it’s slated for a 2023 release, as reported by Anime News Network.
2. The Ancient Magus’ Bride (Season 2)

The Ancient Magus Bride was a favorite among romance and fantasy anime fans when it was first released in 2017. The official Mahoyome Project account Tweeted a promotional poster for the show’s second season in September of last year that featured Chise Hatori with an exposed, blackened shoulder that hints at the next season’s plot.
The Tweet stated that the show would have a same-day airing on April 2023 for both Japanese TV and Amazon Prime Video.
3. The Way of the Househusband (Season 2)

The Way of the Househusband gained throngs of fans in 2021 due to its unique premise that revolved around an ex-yakuza boss leaving a life of crime to become a househusband. The show’s funny moments, which frame regular domestic tasks in gangster language, were an instant hit so it’s no surprise that the show finally got its second season as of January 2023.
4. Tokyo Revengers Christmas Showdown Arc (Season 2)
Tokyo Revengers‘ second season is another early 2023 release that you can already watch on Hulu and Disney+. This continuation of the Tokyo Revengers anime brings the Christmas Conflict a.k.a Christmas Showdown Arc to the small screen.
5. Jujutsu Kaisen (Season 2)
A new season of Jujutsu Kaisen is finally just around the corner. The show has been confirmed for a July 2023 release at the Jump Festa ’23 event, as reported by NME. It’s not clear whether the anime will have a same-day airing for Japanese and global audiences, but we can expect to see the anime on MBS, TBS, and affiliated channels.
The new season of Jujutsu Kaisen will be adapting the manga’s Shibuya Incident and Kaigyo/Gyokusetsu arcs, hence the train scenes in the show’s promotional content.
6. Demon Slayer: Swordsmith Village Arc
Kimetsu no Yaiba‘s popularity isn’t waning anytime soon as the franchise continues to release new series and movies. This coming season of Demon Slayer is an adaptation of the manga’s Swordsmith Village Arc which follows Tanjiro as he tries to get his sword fixed at the swordsmith village all while dodging demon attacks.

Nier: Automata began as an action RPG published by Square Enix, the same company behind the Final Fantasy video game series. The franchise’s popularity following the release of its 2021 and 2017 installments has finally led to an anime adaptation titled Nier: Automata Ver1.1a. The adaptation was created by A-1 Pictures under the direction of Ryouji Masuyama who previously worked on Black Rock Shooter, Gurren Lagann, and Tales from Earthsea.
The anime released on January 7, 2023 so you can watch it now on Crunchyroll, according to Anime News Network.
2023 Anime Movies to Keep an Eye Out For
1. Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos The Movie
Sailor Moon is a classic 90s anime that shaped the entire magical girl genre and basically created it in its current form as we know it today. Clearly, there’s a lot for new animators and directors to live up to when they take on a Sailor Moon related project, but it looks like Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos will meet expectations. This movie adaptation will be bringing the final arc of the Sailor Moon manga, titled “Shadow Galactica”, to the big screen as a two-part movie.
Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos is the second movie installment to Pretty guardian Sailor Moon Eternal and is expected to release in Early Summer 2023.
2. Kaguya-sama: Love is War: The First Kiss Never Ends
It’s been years since Kaguya-sama: Love Is War first premiered, but it’s only just now that we’re starting to see lead characters Shirogane and Kaguya share a romantic relationship with each other. After dozens of manga volumes and anime episodes of tiptoeing around each other, The First Kiss Never Ends gives us a glimpse into how these two navigate their newly official relationship, especially with the threat of a long-distance relationship looming over their heads as graduation approaches.
The First Kiss Never Ends is an adaptation of the 150th manga chapter of Love Is War and marks the end of arc. The movie premiered in Japan last year on December 17, 2022 and is set for a U.S. release this February 2023. There’s no word yet on where it will be available for streaming, but the franchise’s U.S. distributor, Aniplex of America, may release it on platforms that the Love Is War show is already on such as Netflix.
3. Psycho-Pass: Providence
Psycho-Pass made a name for itself as one of anime’s best psychological thriller series back in the early 2010s and is making a comeback with Psycho-Pass: Providence. The movie was announced during the anime’s 10th anniversary event and was expected to be released in October 2022, Cultured Vultures reports, but there han’t been any further announcements from the franchise’s social media accounts and PR team. It’s likely that we’ll get more info on the movie sometime this year announcing that Psycho-Pass: Providence will be released in late 2023.
4. Black Clover: Sword Of The Wizard King
Let’s get one thing out of the way first. No, Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King won’t be canon to the rest of the anime. Black Clover mangaka Yuko Tabata released a statement talking about the movie’s visuals and plot, commenting that it’s a “Why didn’t you do this in the original [manga]?” type of movie, according to Sportskeeda.
Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King will be coming on March 31, 2023.
5. Overlord The Movie: The Holy Kingdom

Overlord The Movie: The Holy Kingdom has been a long time coming. This film adaptation of the manga’s “Holy Kingdom” arc was announced in a special program back in August 19, 2022, according to Anime Corner. The arc is about a besieged Sacred Kingdom whose citizens have no choice but to beg Ainz Ooal Gown for his help, even if it’s against their own rules of piety, as long as it means saving their people from the demon Jaldabaoth.
