The first season of The Last of Us absolutely rocked the world, and fans are certainly hungry for more. While some fans went in skeptical of how well a video game-to-film adaptation would be handled, almost everyone was blown away by the production quality, acting from Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, as well as the minor changes between the game and the show.
If you haven’t finished the first season, you should probably avoid reading this article unless you are ready to hear some spoilers. If you’re worried about season 2 spoilers, this article is mostly spoiler safe. There may be a few hints of what’s to come, but nothing that won’t be revealed before the show gets released.
This article will cover everything like future cast members, trailers, leaks, and more. It’s constantly being updated as new information is released, so make sure you come back from time to time to hear more.
When will The Last of Us season 2 be released?

In short, the Last of Us season 2 will probably be released sometime between the end of 2024 and early 2025. Yeah, we know. It sucks. But the important thing to remember is that rushed TV shows and projects never go well. Trust us; you’d rather wait a year or two for another season of gold instead of getting an absolutely disappointing follow-up season.
The good news is that season 2 has been confirmed by HBO. In fact, it was confirmed that The Last of Us would be renewed for a second season after just two episodes were released. It’s safe to say that HBO liked the rave reviews and millions of viewers their new show has drawn to the platform.
People connected with the show have stated that late-2024 or early-2025 is probably the most realistic release fans should expect. After all, the first season took nearly a year to film, and they haven’t even started filming the second season yet. Add in post-production, and we’re looking at around 18 months, maybe more. In the meantime, you can replay the games or watch other popular TV shows to kill time until its release.
Have they started filming The Last of Us season 2?
Unfortunately, no, not yet. Filming for The Last of Us season 2 has not started and is not expected to start for several months. According to The Independent, not only has it not started filming, but the episodes are still being written by co-creator Craig Mazin.
Bella Ramsey has also spoken about what she thinks the timeline for filming will look like on The Jonathan Ross Show, stating, “It will be a while. I think we’ll probably shoot at the end of this year (2023), beginning of next (2024).” If Ramsey is right, then a late-2024 or early-2025 release doesn’t seem that far off from what will actually happen.
Will The Last of Us season 2 cover the second game?
While the first season of The Last of Us covered the entirety of the first game along with the events in the DLC, The Last of Us: Left Behind, the second season isn’t expected to cover the entirety of the second game.
After being asked in an interview with GQ Magazine if ”the next season [will] span the entire course of the second game,” Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann responded, “No. No way. It’s more than one season.”

By the way!

Whether they decide to split the second game into a part focusing on Ellie and a second part focusing on Abbey or some other way remains to be seen. Either way, fans can probably all agree that this is for the best.
The first season felt rushed at parts, and some fans argued that there wasn’t enough time to build up the relationship between Joel and Ellie. Splitting the second game up into two seasons is probably for the best. Trying to fit that long and amazing story into 9 hours isn’t possible.
Who was cast for The Last of Us season 2?

So far, there’s been no word on who will be cast as the new characters from the second game. It seems they’re still looking for who will play Abbey, Dina, Jesse, Lev, and the others. We know for a fact that Pedro Pascal will be Joel, Bella Ramsey will be Ellie, and Gabriel Luna will return as Tommy.
Fans of the show have voiced concern at Ramsey playing an older Ellie. It should be said that even though Ellie is older in the second game, she is the same age as Bella Ramsey right now, and the showrunners have vehemently agreed that Ramsey will not be recast. The only way Ellie is recast is if Ramsey herself doesn’t want to work on season 2— which she’s already confirmed that she’s ready to start filming.
Is there a trailer for The Last of Us season 2?
Since no filming has taken place yet, we are still a long way away from getting a trailer for season 2. If you’re interested in any sort of teaser from the second game, you could watch the trailer for the actual video game here on YouTube. Comments are disabled, so don’t worry about seeing something that you don’t want to see.
When a trailer does get released, we’ll be sure to drop a link to it here, but again, that’s well away at this point in time. They’ll have to film material first, edit it in post, and then release it to the public. You can probably expect a trailer sometime in the middle of 2024, but that’s a rough estimate.
Where can I watch The Last of Us season 2?

While you can’t watch it anywhere right now since it hasn’t even started filming, the good news is that we already know where you’ll be able to watch it. Since The Last of Us season 1 was released on HBO Max and the series is an HBO Max exclusive, you’ll be able to watch season 2 on the same platform.
If you want, you can always cancel your HBO Max subscription until the new season releases, but then you’ll miss out on the best shows and movies that HBO Max has to offer.
