The 2014 TV popular crime drama series Power sees J.R. Ramirez play Julio Ruiz. The show, created by Courtney A. Kemp, revolves around the drug trade in New York City and the power struggles among various characters involved in the criminal underworld. The show aired on Starz and was made in collaboration with 50 Cent.
Power focuses on James St. Patrick, a ruthless drug dealer who wishes to leave the criminal world and become a legitimate nightclub owner. As St. Patrick tries to balance his criminal life and his aspiring non-criminal one, he encounters numerous troubles, including evading the police and his crumbling marriage.
Jessica Jones (2015-2019)
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe series Jessica Jones, Ramirez appeared as Oscar Arocho. The show follows the life of Jessica Jones, a private investigator with superhuman abilities, as she grapples with her past and faces formidable adversaries.
Ramirez only appears in 11 episodes but serves as a crucial character in Jessica Jones’s life. He is her building’s superintendent and dislikes her at first, but his feelings toward her come around after she saves his son. He even goes on to help her investigate several cases, eventually becoming romantically involved with her for a brief period.
Manifest (2018 – 2021)
One of the few shows where Ramirez plays a main part, Manifest is a supernatural drama series on NBC that focuses on the passengers of a commercial airliner who suddenly reappear after being presumed dead for five and a half years after the plane’s disappearance. Ramirez plays Jared Vasquez, a detective at the NYPD and another main character’s ex-fiance.
Manifest can easily suck you in after the first episode. After a plane experiences some slight turbulence, they find out that five and a half years have passed. A lot has changed in that time, including romantic relationships, but as they begin to experience guiding voices and visions of events to come, the paranormal plot thickens, and the passengers are in a rush to figure out what everything means.
Arrow (2012 – 2020)
Arrow is eight seasons of action-packed superhero fights, mainly focusing on Oliver Queen and his alter-ego, Green Arrow. Ramirez only appears in four episodes in Season 3, but he’s great on screen as Ted Grant, a.k.a Wildcat. Ted Grant is an insanely good boxer who is a former vigilante. If you enjoy superhero shows and movies, definitely give Arrow a try.
Tyler Perry’s House of Payne (2006 – )
House of Payne is a sitcom created by the great Tyler Perry and ran for ten seasons with over 350 episodes. The show revolves around a multi-generational family living in a house in Atlanta. It’s mainly a comedy but is no stranger to darker topics such as addiction. Ramirez plays Diego Hernandez and only appears in seasons 5 and 6, but he definitely adds to every scene he’s in.
Movies
Sun Dogs (2018)
The only movie that’s worth discussing when it comes to Ramirez is 2017’s Sun Dogs. It’s a comedy-drama released on Netflix and centers around a misfit who’s been denied from the military three times. After an officer tells him to “protect the homefront,” Ned Chipley takes his advice a little too seriously and sets up an anti-terrorism unit with the help of a young runaway. Ramirez plays Staff Sergeant Kendrick, a smaller role in this great comedy.
