Even in the earliest moments of Jujutsu Kaisen, the anime, and the manga have already established the fact that currently, no one can surpass Satoru Gojo and that he will also steal your girl. The first part is the absolute truth, the second part? Probably. Those blue eyes will steal anything. Anyway, a show where a good guy is the most powerful has a tendency to become stale.
But Jujutsu Kaisen still managed to keep things interesting by introducing some clever villains who fight dirty and by also throwing in some junior characters with a high ceiling for potential. Thus, candidates for sorcerers that can surpass Satoru Gojo are an exciting prospect, and that’s something the show (and Gojo himself) keeps teasing. Place your bets on one of these guys.
Nobara Kugisaki
Surprised to see her here? That’s because you likely haven’t read the manga yet. The anime didn’t give Nobara much of a spotlight, but later on in the storyline, she’d unlock some hidden potential and, in a nutshell, would be able to touch souls.
Moreover, her pool of cursed energy is nigh-limitless, which could eventually put her on the same level as Satoru Gojo or even eventually surpass him.
It’s worth noting that Gojo in the current Jujutsu Kaisen timeline is nearly 30 years old, and we’re comparing him against much younger sorcerers. Give them a bit more time, and they’ll shine bright, possibly brighter.
Maki Zenin
Out of all the people Gojo has fought against, only one came close to defeating him (or even technically defeated him). That would be the edgiest edgelord sorcerer killer Toji Fushigiro/Zenin, and the closest character in Jujutsu Kaisen’s current timeline would be none other than Maki Zenin, a similar outcast of the reputable Zenin clan.
Maki fights in the same way as Toji does– using cursed weapons and while her Grade rating is low since she cannot manipulate cursed energy directly, neither could Toji, but he still managed to humiliate a younger Gojo.
So it stands within reason that Maki Zenin might eventually reach the same level as Toji or even surpass him, also possibly reaching or surpassing Gojo in the process. Things are pretty grim in the manga with her involved, and that development in the story is well worth the wait.
Hakari Kinji
Hakari Kinji hasn’t officially appeared yet in the anime, but he’s already one of the running candidates for surpassing or reaching Gojo’s level of power. He has higher chances than the others here and was suspended from a Jujutsu Academy for his rebellious nature.
As for Kinji’s potential, even Satoru Gojo believes that one day, the former will have the capacity to rival his power. He’s one of the few students whom Gojo ranks highly despite Kinji’s more direct and blunt fighting style, preferring hand-to-hand combat instead of curse projectiles and tricks.
Sadly, he won’t be appearing in the anime for quite a while.
Aoi Todo
Aoi Todo is one of the most notable and loudest characters in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1, and his reputation precedes him. Those around him keep mentioning his Herculean and impossible combat feats, and the kicker is that he’s only 18 years old despite his buff appearance.
If given time, Todo might just reach Gojo’s level. He’s already one of the most powerful sorcerers in Jujutsu Academy circles and one of the youngest Grade 1 sorcerers in existence.
Todo will incur some setbacks and a debilitating injury in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, but that shouldn’t really hinder his potential too much, considering the versatility of curses and cursed energy. It all depends on the manga author’s whims now.
Megumi Fushigiro
Another one of the few sorcerers whom Gojo insists could rival him in the future is none other than Megumi Fushigiro, a secondary protagonist.
He’s Toji Fushigiro’s estranged son and a protege of the Zenin clan, meaning he has a bright future ahead of him. It’s just that right now, Megumi is having some kind of identity crisis and is struggling to realize his potential with his curse power.
But hey, if Gojo insists that Megumi could rival his power someday, then there’s no debating it. In the manga, Megumi has already made some impressive progress despite his young age. Again with him, it’s only a matter of time before he takes full advantage of his Zenin clan heritage.
Yuji Itadori
When Satoru Gojo was asked who between him and Sukuna would win, his verdict was skeptical, meaning even he’s not that confident in himself. It just so happens that Sukuna is now imprisoned inside Jujutsu Kaisen’s main character and even lends Yuji his power from time to time.
In fact, if Sukuna wanted, he probably could have given Yuji all of his skills depending on how many fingers he currently has (as those are the source of his power). It’s a power fantasy trope that Naruto popularized.
And the mere fact that Yuji could contain a King of Curses like Sukuna makes him one of the toughest and most promising sorcerers in Jujutsu Kaisen.
Yuta Okkotsu
If there was an even more astonishing sorcerer than a teenager who swallowed and imprisoned a King of Curses inside of him, it would be the main male character in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which is the movie. Yuta Okkotsu was so powerful he cursed his dead childhood friend and even weaponized her spirit.
This allowed him to defeat a special-grade sorcerer, Geto Suguru (who is nearly on par with Gojo), despite the lack of training and experience. Also, Yuta was just a teenager at the time. If he were to live and practice even longer, there’s a big chance that he’d surpass Gojo.
Even Gojo himself headhunted Yuta and deemed him as someone who might someday rival his powers. The only thing to do now for fans is to wait until the anime converges all these powerful candidates together, which probably won’t happen in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2.
