Hogwarts Legacy is finally here and it’s one of the biggest game releases of 2023 so far! Some of my friends purchased it and have been sharing their experiences with me, and I am so thrilled. So I thought to myself, why not bake something soul-warmingly delicious to celebrate this? And this prompted me to tinker with a butterbeer cookie recipe.
Hence I got to bake some fun Harry Potter butterbeer cookies! A soft, dense, and frothy drink turned into deliciously sweet and crunchy cookies. They are irresistible as you experience the joys of sneaking into The Three Broomsticks to take one swig of the foamy shake.
I was experimenting with a more budget-friendly recipe for these cookies, as money challenges are there with a few ingredients. But worry not, as I ensured all the syrupy, soft, butterscotchy flavors and textures showcased themselves in these cookies.
Recipe Shortcuts: A Broke Nerd’s Hack

Much like many my age, the 2000s were Pottermaniac’s best moments. I had friends waiting in line all night for the books, and I even rented CDs to watch the movies.
According to my friends, Hogwarts Legacy is everything the toddler-us wanted in a Harry Potter game back then. But here is the thing, even if I grew up around fellow Potterheads, the books were out of my hands.
Now don’t get me wrong, my family could afford the books. I just never wished to ask them. But even now, it pains me to buy an ingredient that I might need just once.
So I was going through many recipes for butterbeer and butterbeer cookies and realized many of the ingredients were a little out of budget for me.
But poor financial situations cannot stir away passions. So I created a recipe that suits not only my budget, but also yours on a day you crave some chewy, crispy, and delectable butterbeer cookies.
White Sugar or Brown Sugar: Which Suits Butterbeer Cookies?

If you asked this to Harry, he would just hand you all his Galleons and say buy both. But price-wise, white sugar takes the cake.
However, in terms of flavor, brown sugar fits most desserts the best. If you want your butterbeer cookies to have a rich caramel flavor, I say go for brown sugar. It is going to give your cookies a mouthwatering toffee flavor.

By the way!
Did you know weโre launching a Kickstarter campaign? In the next few months, our campaign for โGentle Jack: The Party Game for Bad Friendsโ goes live! Visit the official website or follow the Kickstarter page to stay in the loop.
But these days, even if brown sugar should cost less than its white counterpart, the story is in reverse. So even if I am using white sugar for this recipe, I highly suggest brown sugar if you can purchase it.
Trust me, the difference in results will be phenomenally delicious.
My Butterbeer Cookies Recipe From Harry Potter
Step 1: Mix Some Dry Ingredients

Take a bowl and add your flour, a pinch of baking soda, and some salt. Mix it up well and keep the bowl aside. You will need it again after blending all your other ingredients.
Step 2: Mix in Butter and Sugar

In a separate bowl, put in unmelted butter and granulated sugar. Now use a handheld mixer to blend these two ingredients. But if you do not have an electric mixer, I got a solution for you!
Use a stainless wire whisk instead for your butter and sugar blend. Yes, you do have to do some extra manual labor. But trust me that the mix will be just as beautiful.
And if you want a consistent fluffy and creamy blend, tilt your bowl a bit to the side and use your whisk or mixer on that angle. It also helps to blend the ingredients faster.
Step 3: Add in the Flavors!

Once you have a thick consistent sugar and butter blend, it is time to bring in the agents of mass flavors!
In this same bowl, crack a large egg. After that, add your vanilla custard mix powder, vanilla essence, and a few drops of butterscotch essence.
Trust me that the essence will engulf your room with a beautiful caramel and butterscotch aroma in no time.
Now use your wire whisk or handheld mixer and blend this mixture into a smooth creamy fluff.
Step 4: Add the Flour Mixture

Once your butter, egg, sugar, and essence are all mixed in, it is time to add in your dry ingredients. Bring your bowl of flour, salt, and baking soda, and pour it entirely into your wet ingredients mix.
Use your mixer or whisk again for a soft, dough-like thickness. Add some butterscotch bits to the mix and fold them in with a spatula or a spoon.
Now that the cookie batter is ready, seal your bowl with plastic cling wrap and refrigerate your dough for at least two hours.
Step 5: Scoop Into Tiny Balls and Bake

Now for the most fun part of the Harry Potter butterbeer cookies! Take your cookie dough out and let it rest at room temperature for a few minutes. During this time, preheat your oven to 170ยฐC (338ยฐF) for 4 minutes.
Cover your oven-safe pan with a parchment sheet. Up next, scoop out a tablespoon of dough and use your palms to make it a small ball.
Place these balls on your baking sheet with enough space between them so they do not stick to one another. Once the sheet has enough butterbeer cookie dough balls on it put it in the oven for 15 minutes at 180ยฐC (356ยฐF.)
At the 12th-minute mark, pause the oven to take the pan out. Sprinkle some extra butterscotch crunch bits on the cookie tops for a creamy finish. Put it back in for another three minutes till the edges are golden-brown perfection.
Enjoy these sweet, heavenly cookies with crunchy edges, soft, chewy center, and popping caramelly butterscotch notes.
Enjoy them slowly as they melt in your mouth, leaving a reminiscence of chilled butterbeer on a warm afternoon in Hogsmeade.
I hope this recipe brings you a heap of warm nostalgic joy. And I am thrilled to know how the cookies turned out. Have a great day!
