Baldur’s Gate 3 is praised for not just its level of game design but also the captivating casts of companions and romance options you’re introduced to in the game. One of them is Gale, the mysterious Wizard of Waterdeep. If you’re eager to explore and potentially romance him, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve provided tips on how to earn his approval and guide you in difficult dialogue options in wooing the wizard.
Gale is one of the easiest companions to romance and the most popular too. Romance aside Gale is the only wizard companion in Baldur’s Gate 3 and it might be difficult to keep him in the party. Especially in preparing and choosing the right spells for Gale for new players. It will be overwhelming at first, but he is one of the most fun party members to use once you know how to creatively use his spells.
Meeting the Wizard of Waterdeep

Of course, you need to add Gale to your party. But where is he?
You’ll first encounter Gale at the Roadside Cliffs waypoint shortly after the Nautiloid crashes on the Ravaged Beach, where he’ll appear as a hand sticking out of a magical portal. To add him to your party you should help him out of the portal.
After you help him out of the portal he immediately introduces himself to you. Gale recognizes you from the Nautiloid and confirms that he also has a mind-flayer parasite and suggests finding a healer that can help you all from transforming into mind-flayers.
Choose the option to find a healer and Gale will automatically be added as your companion. If your party is full you can visit him back at the campsite or remove one of your companions to add him to your party.
How to Gain Gale’s Affection
It’s important to have a high approval rating with Gale. You’ll need to make specific dialogue and action choices throughout the game’s questlines and encounters. Keep Gale in your party as much as you can to progress both his companion quest and gain his approval. It’s crucial not to make too many negative choices if you want to end up with him. A negative relationship with Gale will close any potential romance with him and he might leave the party permanently. You might want to quick-save from time to time. Just to be safe.
Being the morally upright member of your party, Gale is drawn to actions such as:
- Exhibiting intelligence
- Magical knowledge
- Kindness and acts of heroism
- An interest in poetry
- (Most crucial of all) giving him artifacts
Conversely, avoid actions that involve:
- Unnecessary violence
- Display of stupidity
- Lack of curiosity
- Show judgment regarding his condition
It’s easy, right? You just have to be a hero in front of Gale and give him lots of affirmation in his ability as a magician. He needs an ego stroke too you know.

Romancing Gale in Act 1
The first encounters and quests are crucial to developing your relationship with Gale. It also helps you discover the mysteries behind the Wizard of Waterdeep.
Most of the interactions with your companions happen when you take long rests at the campsite. Use them as much as you can if you want to progress your relationship with Gale!
Feeding Gale Magic Artifacts

One of the hidden sides of Gale’s character emerges when you’ve gathered enough points for his approval. He confides in you about his unique condition that requires him to consume magical artifacts. To progress his story you should agree to help him with magical items when the need arises. You’ll know this when you see an exclamation mark above his head.
This might be one of the biggest hurdles in romancing Gale, but you only need to offer three artifacts for him to finally open up to you during a campfire conversation. Loot as much as you can, you’ll find most magical items are littered throughout the map.
The Weave

To finally start your romance with Gale, you must choose specific dialogue options during your early interactions in camp. Once you have high approval, let him teach you how to manipulate the Weave. Be careful on what you choose.
Again, just keep in mind:
- Show appreciation for his magical expertise and knowledge
- Express your desire for a deeper connection
- Share an intimate thought with Gale
After the scene and taking your long rest. You can ask Gale about your shared moment in the Weave. Continue to build his approval by following his preferred actions and choices.
Magical Familiar
The next time you talk to Gale at camp he will open up about his familiar, Tara. Of course, show genuine interest in Gale.
This will set the stage for your romance to continue further in Act 2.
Romancing Gale in Act 2
Your journey to winning Gale’s heart continues in Act 2. To progress, you’ll need to complete Gale’s companion quest. If you want to explore more of the many choices during interactions with him at camp. Try to make a habit of quick saving before choosing dialogue options.
Meeting the Wizard Elminster

Elminster appears as a messenger to Mystra, the goddess of magic. You’ll find him at the front of the Shadow-Cursed Lands. Find Elminster and invite him to your camp. This step is essential in advancing Gale’s companion quest, which plays a crucial role in both his companion quest and romantic storyline. It also reveals a huge secret about who Mystra really is to Gale and what her intentions are with Wizard’s unusual condition.
The Mirror Image Encounter

The next pivotal moment occurs after completing the quest: Gauntlet of Shar. Just before the final battle of Act 2, return to your camp. You’ll discover a Mirror Image of Gale in place of where he usually rests. Follow his specter to trigger the next scene. As long as you refrain from resting, you’ll be able to progress to the next romantic encounter with him.
During this scene, if you’ve managed to earn Gale’s favor, you might successfully end up spending the night with him. I’ll leave it at that for you to experience a steamy night with him under the stars.
Romancing Gale in Act 3
If Act 2 was the rising action, then Act 3 is the climax of your romance with Gale. In this part of the story, you have to choose what happens to Gale. Again, just like in Act 2 always do a quick-saves as much as you can if you want smoother gameplay.
Discovering the Crown of Karsus

Bring Gale to your party when you enter the vault of the Sorcerous Sundries. This is where you’ll be able to investigate the lore of the Crown of Karsus by reading the book “The Annals of Karsus.” This action will pique Gale’s interest in the crown’s immense power.
After reading the knowledge about the Crown of Karsus, Gale will wish to continue the conversation at your campsite. Expect him to passionately discuss the crown’s potential and the implications it holds for both of you.
Gale’s Faith

If you want to experience multiple endings, I suggest you do a lot of save files before you proceed. Your influence will determine Gale’s fate. You can choose to try and talk Gale down from pursuing something reckless, or you can encourage him to continue his quest to become a god.
Do not take a long rest just yet. The next part is easily missed by most players. Let Gale speak to Elminster about Gale’s failed mission. Elminster will request Gale to go to the Tabernacle to meet the magical goddess, Mystra. Gale’s answer and actions from here on out will depend on what path you choose for him and what the future holds for the both of you.
That’s mostly it for Gale’s romance in Baldur’s Gate 3. Hopefully, this guide’s helpful for the fans of the mysterious Wizard. Or for the people who want to keep him as their companion.
