Cooking in Stardew Valley isn’t just about satisfying your virtual hunger; it’s a way to boost your abilities and enhance your gaming experience as you explore the world of Stardew Valley. Unlocking these cooking recipes may seem difficult for new players, but you’re in luck because we’ll delve into the many benefits of cooking, spanning from setting up your kitchen to obtaining most of the recipes in the game.
Step 1: Get a Kitchen
Fortunately, you’ll obtain the Kitchen as part of your first house upgrade. Upgrading your house is similar to upgrading your farm buildings. You can head to the Carpenter’s Shop and select “Make House Renovations”. For this initial upgrade, you’ll need the following:
- 450 pieces of wood
- 10,000 gold
This renovation takes three in-game days to complete.
Step 2: Gather Ingredients
Cooking requires ingredients, and luckily, Stardew Valley offers a variety of options. Many ingredients can be grown on your farm, making it easier to access them. Here’s a breakdown of the ingredient types used for cooking:
- 26 crop types
- 13 forage-ables
- 4 tree fruits
- 2 animal products
- 4 artisan goods
- 2 miscellaneous items
- 17 fishing produce
- 8 crab pots produce
- 5 Pierre General Store produce
- 6 cooked dishes
Determining which ingredients you need for a specific recipe is straightforward. Stand over your stove or Cookout Kit, click on the desired recipe, and you’ll see a list of required ingredients. If you lack sufficient ingredients, the food icon will appear faded.
Step 3: Obtain Recipes
There are a total of 80 different dishes to discover, and apart from the Fried Egg recipe, which you receive with your house upgrade, you’ll need to learn the others through other means. Here are some examples:

The Queen of Sauce: You can obtain recipes by watching the cooking channel. It airs every Sunday during the first two in-game years then it will switch to Wednesdays instead.
Buying Recipes: Gus sells recipes at the Stardrop Saloon, with prices ranging from 50 gold to 5,000 gold. Better to keep an eye on the prices.
Gifts From Villagers: As you build relationships with the townspeople, you’ll receive gifts in the mail, including food recipes. Check your mail regularly, as some of these gifts can be culinary treasures.

Step 4: How to Cook
Once you’ve gathered all the necessary ingredients, cooking will be a breeze. Click on the icon of the food you wish to prepare, and that’s it! Cooking not only replenishes your health and energy but also you’ll gain various buffs depending on the recipes you cook.
Step 5: Get a Cookout Kit
The 1.5 update introduced the Cookout Kit, which grants you the ability to cook anywhere outside your farmhouse. To unlock this feature, reach Level 9 in foraging, and you’ll receive the crafting recipe as well. To craft a Cookout Kit, you’ll need:
- 15 pieces of Wood
- 10 clumps of Fiber
- 3 pieces of Coal
You can place the Cookout Kit anywhere for outdoor use, but remember that it will disappear the following day. If needed, you can also dismantle it using your axe, hoe, or pickaxe.
