Honkai: Star Rail (HSR) relic sets are fairly new to the game. They are also essential in building and powering up your in-game characters, making them formidable opponents to all enemies. But what exactly are these relics?
Relic sets offer a variety of benefits to their holders, such as embuing them with more strength, giving them bonus defenses, raising their crit DMG, and more! You can say they are similar to the artifact sets in Genshin Impact.
They vary in rarities, going up to 5 stars, and let you customize your character builds efficiently for combats. Now, While in Genshin Impact, you can only 6 artifact pieces to a character, HSR lets you equip a character with 6 relics maximum. Moreover, you have 2 relics sets options.

What are Honkai: Star Rail Relic Sets?
Before we get into how these relic sets work, let us first understand HSR relic sets. These are key components in buffing up your characters with powerful bonuses.
Each set comes with six relic parts which you can mix and match with parts from other sets to suit a character’s best builds. This means that to make strong teams, you’ll need to farm different relic sets to customize your relic builds for all characters.
Moreover, there’s a catch in this mix and matches! Among six relic pieces, if more than one comes from one particular set, you get some extra buffs. These are additional bonuses granted for choosing multiple pieces from a set.
How to Do Honkai: Star Rail Relics Function?
To understand how HSR relics work, let us come to relic stats and sub-stats. Each relic piece comes with a possible main stat. Check out the table below to understand it better:

Sub Stats in HSR Relics
While the stats mentioned above are the main possible stats, there is also a list of sub-stats that gets added to the pieces as you level them up.
The equipment slots determine if a piece has only one main stat or receives multiple stats. But that is not the case for sub-stats. Sub-stats are shared among all the pieces and are determined by randomly generated numbers (RNG.)

When you level up relic pieces, the pieces receive a certain substat or buff at variable intervals. These increases can be flat rates, or percentages, depending on HSR‘s RNG system.
These sub-stats are:

- Effective hit rate
- Outgoing healing boost
Depending on a relic piece’s rarity, it can have four sub-stats assigned to it.
How to Upgrade HSR Relics?
There are various ways of upgrading relics in HSR. They are very similar to the Genshin Impact artifact upgrading system and come with choices like:
- Using unwanted and/or lower-rarity relics
- Using Lost Crystals
- Using Lost Light Dusts
- Using Lost Gold Fragments
