Get ready for another (un)holy adventure. Good Omens is finally coming back this month with its highly anticipated second season.
Based on the beloved novel Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Neil Gaiman and the late Sir Terry Pratchett, the Amazon Prime Video series revolves around the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley, who reside on Earth as representatives of heaven and hell. They knew from the beginning that the end of the world will come sooner or later, but they’ve grown so fond of the world and of each other that they find themselves teaming up to prevent the Apocalypse.

As a screen adaptation, Good Omens retains the very best parts of the book and adds a little extra — mainly in the form of a queer love story spanning 6,000 years at the very heart of the show. But now that Season 2 is covering ground outside the original novel (and after the events of the adorable little 2021 short Good Omens: Lockdown), what can we expect from the next chapter of Good Omens this July?
Here’s what you need to know.
What’s Going to Happen in Good Omens Season 2?
Good Omens was originally intended as a limited series, but its global success — evident in its Hugo and Nebula awards, dedicated fan base, and one of the most prolific fanfiction communities on AO3 — pushed Amazon to renew the series for another season in 2021.
The Source Material
Because Season 1 covered the events of the novel (with some slight but delightful changes), the upcoming second season tells an entirely original story — though it was built from ideas Neil Gaiman and the late Sir Pratchett had for an unrealized sequel.
“It’s thirty-one years since Good Omens was published, which means it’s thirty-two years since Terry Pratchett and I lay in our respective beds in a Seattle hotel room at a World Fantasy Convention, and plotted the sequel,” Gaiman shared in a statement.
“Terry’s not here any longer, but when he was, we had talked about what we wanted to do with Good Omens, and where the story went next. And now, thanks to BBC Studios and Amazon, I get to take it there.”
Writing alongside Gaiman in the show’s sophomore season is John Finnemore.
A New Mystery
After successfully thwarting the Apocalypse, Aziraphale and Crowley are getting back into the regular rhythm of their immortal lives (and, for Crowley, adjusting to retirement), when an unexpected messenger delivers a new mystery: How exactly did the archangel Gabriel go missing from Heaven and turn up naked at Aziraphale’s shop — with absolutely no memory of who he is and why he’s there?

By the way!
Did you know we’re launching a Kickstarter campaign? In the next few months, our campaign for ‘Gentle Jack: The Party Game for Bad Friends‘ goes live! Visit the official website or follow the Kickstarter page to stay in the loop.
In the trailer, eagle-eyed fans of the Ineffable Husbands are sure to notice Aziraphale’s small smile at archangel Gabriel saying, “You know what it’s like, when you don’t know anything at all and yet you’re totally certain that everything would be better if you were just near one particular person?”
A sneak peek, released in late June, would give us some further clues as to what might be in store for the unholy duo… if only Gabriel could remember.
A second sneak peek, this time focusing on Crowley, shows us the retired demon in a bit of an existential crisis and receiving a visit — and some interesting updates — from downstairs.
Love Is in the Air
Neil Gaiman has shared a few clues for what to expect as well.
For instance, he told the audience in a panel at the New York Comic Con last October that Season 2 will feature some love stories. “I will say you will learn a lot about Jane Austen you didn’t know before,” he said a little cryptically. “There’s a lot more heaven and a lot more hell.”
Speaking at the same event, Gaiman also described Season 2 as “kind of quiet and gentle and romantic, as opposed to Season 1.” If a Season 3 will be green lit, he said that it would be similar in tone to Season 1, making the upcoming installment of Good Omens “the soft, gentle romance in the filling of the sandwich.”
How Many Episodes Will Good Omens Season 2 Have?
Like its predecessor, Season 2 of Good Omens will have six episodes. All episodes will be released at once.
Who Is in the Cast of Good Omens Season 2?
Michael Sheen and David Tennant, who play Aziraphale and Crowley, respectively, lead a large ensemble cast.
With them returning for Season 2 are Jon Hamm (who plays the archangel Gabriel), Doon Mackichan (archangel Michael), Gloria Obianyo (archangel Uriel), Derek Jacobi (Metatron, the spokesperson for God), Steve Pemberton (Glozier), Mark Gatiss (Harmony), Reece Shearsmith (William Shakespeare), Adria Arjona (Anathema Device), Michael McKean (Witchfinder Sergeant Shadwell), Jack Whitehall (Newton Pulsifer), Nick Offerman (Thaddeus Dowling), Brian Cox (Death), and Mireille Enos (War). Frances McDormand will be returning as the voice of God and the series’ narrator.
Some new characters are played by existing cast members, as in the case of Miranda Richardson. After playing the human medium Madame Tracy in Season 1, she’s back this time around as Shax, Hell’s new representative in London — and Crowley’s replacement.
Maggie Service, meanwhile, is back in Season 2 as Maggie, the owner of the record store next to Aziraphale’s bookshop. In Season 1, she played the satanic nun Sister Theresa Garrulous. Nina Sosanya, who played another satanic nun in Sister Mary Loquacious, has transformed into Nina, a coffee shop owner whose café is right across from Maggie’s store.

Among the newcomers is Quelin Sepulveda, who plays Muriel, a nice, well-meaning angel — somewhat of a rarity in the Good Omens universe. Muriel has spent the last 6,000 years in the same office in Heaven, which makes her a little gullible and chatty.
Season 2 also welcomes the likes of Liz Carr, Tim Downie, Pete Firman, Alex Norton, and Shelley Conn, among others, into the fold.
David Tennant’s son Ty and father-in-law Peter Davison are also set to appear in Season 2, though there are no clues yet as to what characters they’ll be playing.
When Is Good Omens Season 2 Coming Out?
The release date for Good Omens Season 2 is on Friday, July 28, 2023.
The announcement came on the 33rd anniversary of the publication of the novel and with a hilarious video from The Hillywood Show — featuring a “Billie Eyelash” song, “All the Good Girls Go to Hell.”
