Fans of Adventure Time will be happy to hear that the new installment in the series is being released on Max very soon. The raging success of the first two series in the franchise has led to the purchasing of another, and fans couldnโt be happier. While this was first announced in 2021, it is finally being released and coming to Max, HBOโs streaming service, on August 31st. This new series will bring the two characters first seen in a 2011 episode accurately titled “Fionna and Cake” on a search for self-discovery and adventure as they explore the multiverse together.
What will Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake be about?

This new series will revolve around Fionna the Human and Cake the Cat, two characters previously featured on Adventure Time, and gender swaps of, well, Finn the Human and Jake the Dog.
As seen in the trailer released by Max, Cake is bored with everything (and it seems Fionna is, too), as they both wish for a more magical world. We already know that the pair will travel through the multiverse โwhile a powerful new antagonist determined to track them down and erase them from existence, lurks in the shadows,โ according to the write-up by Warner Bros.
One notable change is that Fionna is now a young adultโshe even has a job. Suzanna Makkos, an executive at Max, said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, โThe Adventure Time fans have grown upโฆ it is very much Adventure Time, but Fiona is older. Sheโs in the workforce. Itโs more adultโฆโ
Makkos also mentions the success of Velma, an adult spinoff of Scooby-Doo that was released earlier this year, along with the planned release of Bedrock, an adult spinoff of The Flintstones. It seems that studios are recognizing a “renaissance” in adult animation, as Makkos puts it in her interview, hinting that we might be in for more in the future.
Who will be in Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake?
Obviously, we can expect the titular characters, Fionna and Cake, but it seems there may be a few other characters from the other series in Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake. Currently, we can expect the return of the former Ice King, Simon Petrikov. Beyond that, there hasnโt been too much information about any other characters returning, like Donald Glover as Marshall Lee or the Ice Queen voiced by Grey Griffin.
We do know that Fionna and Cake are voiced by their previous voice actors (Madeleine Martin and Roz Ryan, respectively). The Ice King will continue to be voiced by Tom Kenny. Itโs unclear if Finn and Jake will be making guest appearances in the new series, but it hasnโt been denied either yet.
Who is creating Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake?
Adam Muto, the showrunner for the latter half of Adventure Time, is returning as the showrunner and executive producer for Fionna and Cake. The series will be produced by Cartoon Network Studios but released on the streaming service Max. This is not the first time Max has partnered with Cartoon Network for Adventure Time, as they previously partnered together for Adventure Time: Distant Lands back in 2020.
Where can I watch Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake?
Youโll be able to watch Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake this August 31st, 2023, on Max, HBOโs streaming service. Youโll need a Max subscription to watch it, but you can get a seven-day free trial through Amazon Prime if you have that. Other than that, there is no direct free trial from Max, so youโll have to cough up the $9.99 (with ads) or $15.99 (no ads) to watch it.
How many episodes will it be?
Currently, Max has only ordered ten half-hour episodes. However, as Makkos mentioned in her interview with The Hollywood Reporter about adult animation being a burgeoning market, it’s likely that a successful reception by audiences could lead to more episodes being ordered. Although, with the way Max works, it might not take much to get a second season in the works. After all, Velma has already been confirmed for a second season, and that has a 1.6/10 on IMDb.
